After 27 years of being strictly vegetarian I started with eating meat. Some of my close friends and family are totally shocked because of this shift. I never ate any meat, fish or gelatine. I did use some diary though to balance my diet. But than I fell in love with a butchers daughter. She totally accepted my vegetarian lifestyle but didn't adopt it. We usually enjoyed vegetarian meals together. Only eating by friends or in restaurants my girlfriend did go for meat. She enjoyed it so much that it made me curious. The idea of eating meat myself (together) got slowly into my system. I convinced my girlfriend that I would like to try (at first she could not believe this and was against this idea) and she prepared a chicken fillet. It was almost a spiritual feeling to eat meat, the texture, the taste and I got really excited by the idea that now I was eating something that had lived. Afterwards I tried other sorts of meat like beef. Only in small proportions because of my stomach having trouble with handling meat. At this point we only eat meat in the weekends and in my experience I have more energy after eating meat, less gas and a better relief. I am playing with the idea to give meat a more central position in my diet. Strange idea though, in the past I did not eat meat because I did not want to eat animals. Now I am eating meat and I am totally aware of the fact that once this was a living animal. I love to eat meat that still looks like an animals, like chicken. On the internet I didn’t found anything on this subject, only the other way around: starting with vegetarian food seems to be common sense. I am happy to meet people with the same strange diet background as I have. I hope this group is still alive !
Cheers, Ramon

hi ramon and i'm new to this tribe too (this is my first time posting)

like yourself i was a vegetarian for over 20 years. i started eating meat again for health reasons (all the carbs i was eating gave me crohn's disease). I feel much healthier now. I like to think of my diet as an expanded caveman diet. the first human being were hunters and gatherer's. it's a nuts and berries thing to me. my diet feels much more organic than it ever did when I was trying so hard to be natural

cheers....and welcome to the tribe! b

I took a holistic health class in college and the teacher stated, "I'm not going to make any comments on the ethics or spirtuality on eating meat or living a vegetarian lifestyle. The only thing I'm going to say is that the human body is made up to eat meat."

I too have been a vegetarian for the past 11 years. I have eaten fish for the past 2 or 3 years though. I have recently gotten really sick and discovered that I was extremely anemic. My iron level was at a 5, where as a woman at my age should be between 13-15. I originally stopped eating meat because of phobias, and a type of OCD. But have since gotten over all those feelings and also have fallen in love with an avid hunter. This said, I am ready to eat meat again. I am a little scared because I don't know where to start. I'm scared my body won't know how to handle it. But, I have heard so many benefits of people eating meat, that I really feel I must go back. Maybe I will start with some bacon bits on my salad today... any suggestions?

I definitely wouldn't start with bacon bits. I would start with some very good quality free-range chicken or beef. Or some meat that your avid hunter bf has gotten. This would be more like the meat that our human ancestors ate. Human's were hunters and gatherers for millions of years before we started farming and growing grains, which was only about 10,000 years ago. If you are a type O, blood type, as I am, you would even be more predisposed to being a meat eater. I suggest googling "caveman diet" and "paleolithic diet" and I would also check out "Eat Right for Your Type ( that refers to blood type) by Adamo. Just look at it and don't take everything as gospel. Good luck.
