i know this tribe has been kinda inactive for a while.
I was a strict vegetarian for 10 years before falling off the wagon. I have been a moderate meat eated for the last 4 years or so,
Nice to bump into others like me.

Hi Poopy, and welcome! I was also having trouble meeting people with the same diet background as myself - it's a strange place to be in ethically - I have many of the same opinions of animal farming, yet (especially red) meat has become a modest joy I'd rather not do without now. (And I'm now learning to hunt large game - first hunt this autumn!)
You're correct - after an initial flurry of "me too!", the conversation seems to have fallen off a bit. I'll see what I can do ;)

Re: hello
Wed, June 22, 2005 - 7:04 AMWhen I first started eating meat again, I became really addicted to red meat and obsessed over it. Fajitas and cheeseburgers with mustard were all I craved. Now I just mostly just eat other kinds of meat when i DO eat meat, but dont' completely restrict myself from having a bite or two of my boyfriend's steak.
I have tried a few times to go back to being a vegetarian, but it just doesn't last very long...mostly it's the restriction that gets to me. i can have vegetarian days..or even vegetarian weeks..but that's about it.
It hasn't been 100% terriffic to be a meat eater again. For one thing, I've gained alot of weight. I was a fat kid and only really lost the weight when I was 14 and became a vegetarian. I needed some kinds of restrictions to my diet because it was really out of control. (I seem to have inherited my dad's compulsion towards food)...so after becoming vegetarian I lost almost 40 lbs...because I wasn't gobbling up everything in sight. I managed to stay fairly height-weight proportionate 'till I started eating meat again..then my weight rapidly ballooned ( i was also working at an ice cream shop at the time)
...now I am a slightly overweight..moderate meat eater.
I don't think it is just the meat..I am also a bit older now and my dietary choices aren't always so great. -

I've been known to do this, too, although it's more something I notice in retrospect than a conscious decision upfront. I actually really enjoy well done vegetarian food, (Chinese, in particular) but here in the SF Bay Area I've actually yet to have anything even remotely close to the kinds of delectable meatless eats I used to get when I lived in Houston. (go figure)
I have a suspicion this has something to do with the weird sensory denial thing a lot of BA organic crunchy granola-types seem to have going on. It's like some of these people are convinced that the enjoyment of savoriness, aroma and mouthfeel are BAD THINGS. (and unfortunately some restaurants seem to cater to this mindset) -

Thu, July 28, 2005 - 10:06 AMReally? I am surprised! I thought that SF would be overflowing with delicious vegetarian food...But I reckon that would be just like those folks to be into sensory denial like that.
Where did you like to go for vegetarian stuff when you lived in H-town?
Wonderful? Green plant?....Indian places?...(those are some of the places I have gone for really decent vegetarian food)
Unfortunately there aren't too many resturaunts in the Heights that specialise in Vegetarian... although a Thai place is scheduled to open soon, I heard...oh yeah...and theres the relatively new Vietnamese place..Vietnam..but they always seem to be mopping the floor every time we go there -

Wed, August 10, 2005 - 5:45 PMWhen I lived in Houston my fave spot was Wonderful Vegetarian. (now called Tien Ren, apparently) Finding that place was really a revelation for me, as well as for many other people I introduced it to, on how, er... wonderful vegetarian food could be. The whole textural component of the dishes was particularly interesting to me, the chewiness and mouthfeel of the mock meats was a key element to producing an experience that closely resembled, or even surpassed, that of eating actual meat. (I personally like the slightly squishy and rubbery feel you sometimes find in Asian dishes in general, vegetarian or not)

Green Planet was the one further down Westheimer towards the Beltway, right? Went there sometimes, too. Also very good. For Indian, there were many good places, but one that I remember specifically was on Kirby, a South Indian place called Madras Pavilion I think. And the Lebanese places always had fantastic vegetarian options, I remember frequenting Dimassi's and Sammy's in particular.
There was also a place wayyyy the heck out there called Quan Yin Vegetarian that I tried once, Vietnamese owned I think, but did a mix of styles.

Re: hello
Wed, August 10, 2005 - 11:00 PMI have been to lots of those places...well..I never did get to try Madras.
But Diamassis yeah..and ..I forget the name of the place @ Richmond and Kirby..
I still call "Wonderful" "Wonderful" even though the name changed. I used to eat there with my family all the time when i was a teenager (my mom still is a vegetarian)... and it was THE meetup place for various activist groups that I attempted to belong to. Yeah, that place blew my mind and really stoked my enthusiasm for being a vegetarian..it was one of my staple places for my 10 "vegetarian" years. I liked Green Planet too..I think the owners were part of the family that owned Wonderful...and they split for some reason..GP (i don't know if they are still around) had a more cheerful atmosphere..while Wonderful..esp..when they switched names became increasingly somber.
Anywhoo..there is a relatively new place on Richmond called the Pepper Tree (or something)..right across from Oishi, my favorite sushi resturaunt....strict vegetarian..offers a buffet on weekends. I liked it alot...though if we are in the neighborhood, it is usually for Sushi... They have all these statistics printed up on their menu board about how much healthier a vegetarian diet is supposed to be.
Certainly encouraging...for those encouragable types.
